The AD process produces biogas that is used to produce heat or electricity, displacing fossil fuels and contributing towards Scotland’s renewable energy targets.

Another by-product of the state-of-the-art process is the production of an organic fertiliser and nutrient source, which in turn can displace carbon-intensive chemical fertilisers, contributing towards sustainable soil strategies and food production.

new regulations

The Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012 were approved by the Scottish Parliament and came into force on May 17, 2012. This signifies a landmark step-change in the way individuals and businesses in Scotland manage their waste.

The new regulations are designed to make the most of the fact that waste, when treated appropriately, is a valuable resource which holds the potential to significantly boost Scotland’s economy and create Green jobs. The Regulations will help deliver the Government’s Zero Waste agenda and recycling targets.

Keys provisions of the Regulations regarding food state that businesses involved in food manufacture, preparation or retail will be required to separate food waste for recycling from 2014 onwards.

Why should businesses recycle food waste?

  • It’s the law in Scotland if you are a food producing business with more than 5kg of food waste produced per week. Don’t risk not complying and a getting a £10,000 fine.
  • Having your food waste as a separate waste stream will also prevent contamination of other waste helping with the recycling of all your other materials.
  • There are numerous environmental reasons as well, such as preventing waste to landfill and cutting back on harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
